IMVETA
THE FLEMISH DON’T JUST TALK, THEY ACT Belgium January 2006 It’s easy to have comment on the guest country during a fancy holiday, because in our eyes they go around scandalously with their pets and other animals. Stray dogs and cats, chain dogs, fully packed mules, they disturb our holiday fun. We forget for the sake of convenience that in our countries, yet not quite so long ago, we made use of dogcarts and that we used horses as drawers for a vehicle they scarcely could pull. And we too had lots of dogs and cats wandering on our streets. What countries as Greece, Italy and Spain certainly do not need is our criticism. You cannot change a situation by condemning the population. What helps is an act put, some example given, let see that things can be done in a different way. Let the people see that this different approach will result for both animal and man in a win/win. Imveta is such a foundation that dedicated itself to help Spanish shelters. They do not only provide medical attention, they also give information as well to the shelter owners and workers as to the local population. Questions that are at order are: I want a pet so what do I have to know before I get one? How can I keep my pet in good condition? Is taking a pet a decision for lifetime? Last year in July IMVETA begun with six spay and neuter projects. In the first shelter, Herencia, the situation was miserable. One woman looks after some 160 dogs without any help from others. No wonder that there any help is welcome in any form! In other shelters there where better situations and there where even worse situations. Depending on the local administration and the amount of volunteers the shelter had. But where ever they went, there where many happy faces when they saw what was done and achieved by IMVETA. It is not for nothing that the man once said: Give someone a bowl of rice and he will not have hunger that day, give him land and rice to plant and he and his family will never starve again!! Starting March or May 2006 IMVETA will open a fix clinic in the region of Almeria. This clinic will be able to help all Almerian shelters on a permanent base and also attend to the general public. Do you want to help Imveta? You could become a member, a volunteer or just donate goods. . For more information you can visit our website: www.imveta.org
